Not to brag, but I started drinking matcha over ten years ago. I love the slow release of caffeine over time and the earthy, grassy flavor. Don’t get me wrong, sometimes you need the violent jolt of coffee or a festive peppermint mocha (a festive beverage I indulged in for three months this winter), but on the whole, I’ve fully transitioned to a basic matcha girly.
After our trip to Japan, I wanted to authenticate my morning ritual - moving away from the electric frother and individual packets of matcha powder, to small tins, a tea sifter and bamboo whisk. I even just made my own chawan at a ceramics class last weekend - shout out to Cameron Bishop of Beau Rush.
Frothing my matcha by hand is somewhat meditative amidst the chaos that is a weekday morning in a household with young children. As Brendan and I both migrate closer and closer to east coast hours, this meditation has emerged to be even more vital to my survival.
What is your morning ritual?
Here are some of my favorite matcha and accoutrements.
